Diogo Dalot admitted Manchester United's failure to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League is 'not good enough', but insisted the performance against Bayern Munich should set the standard for the remainder of the season.
Kingsley Coman scored the only goal of the game as Bayern won 1-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, condemning United to last spot in Group A.
United's four points from six games is their lowest ever tally in the Champions League and the 15 goals they have conceded is the most by a Premier League side in any group stage of the competition.
United were architects of their own downfall, twice surrendering two-goal lead away from home to lose against FC Copenhagen and draw against Galatasaray in Istanbul.
The latter result left United needing to beat Bayern and hoping for a draw in Copenhagen and Dalot conceded they only had themselves to blame.
'We cannot concede so many goals that we conceded in this group stage. It’s just not good enough. We’re obviously sad,' he told the club's website.
'But, at the same time, we just have to realise that this is not the standard that we want to set for this club and for us. So we have to get better.'
United looked far more solid than in their previous Champions League outings on Tuesday night, but failed to create any clear-cut chances and could only muster one shot on goal across 90 minutes.
Erik ten Hag, however, insisted he was pleased with the performance.
'Today's performance was very good. We didn't deserve to lose, but we lost the game,' the Dutchman told TNT Sports after the final whistle.
'But also Bayern is a good team. Even when they are not in the game, they have individual class and just need one moment. Unfortunately that happened.
'We know we want to be more consistent.'
Dalot echoed his manager's thoughts, suggesting there were positives to be taken from the sorry defeat to the Bundesliga giants.
'We came here today to win the game. We knew that that was the only result that we wanted,' he added.
'I think we did enough to win the game. We played well, especially first half. We were in control,
'I think we showed composure with the ball, good pressing as well. I think we were compact. We made it difficult for them.
'This is how we should approach every game, so this is the kind of standard that we want to set for the rest of the games.'
United have already lost 11 games in all competitions this season and face Premier League leaders Liverpool away Anfield on Sunday, where they were battered 7-0 six months ago.
Ten Hag could be without Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, who were both injured against Bayern and join a long list of long-term absentees.

Dalot, Rashford, Bruno and Onana have been awful this season yet they start every game. That’s how much our coach cares about the fans.

It's upto you guys, It's true that a tree can not make a forest but you can lay a good example for others to follow. We have seen the likes of trippier and Liv at Newcastle, Walker and Ake at Man City, Arnold and Richarlson at Liverpool and etc..... you too can turn things around.

everywhere is quiet because Bayern won, but look at the kind of noise English media generated because Manchester United won since 1999
