Does Potter realise that nice guys finish last? He must develop a nasty streak

Graham Potter could have walked into his post-match press conference and fumed. He could have complained it was a clear handball from Tomas Soucek that stopped Chelsea from winning. He could have said a team that cost over half a billion should have done more to win.

Instead, Potter was surprisingly laid-back about this third successive Premier League draw, sarcastic about Soucek's 'save', sympathetic about VARs being 'human' and composed when talking about how Chelsea, for all their lavish spending, are very much a 'work in progress'.

In the end, we got 'Nice Guy Graham' when, sometimes, you would like to see 'No Prisoners Potter'.

It might not be his style, but occasionally Chelsea's supporters would like to see their manager show some anger, like Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte or Thomas Tuchel in their pomp. Listening to Potter, you wonder how he handles this Chelsea changing room. How he speaks to Marc Cucurella, the left back who is being jeered by his own fans. How he talks to Kai Havertz, the striker who cannot score. How he deals with a squad worth so much.

Potter is out to show nice guys do not have to finish last. But as Danny Murphy said on Match of the Day: 'I wish he was more angry.' Perhaps in time, that side will show itself.

'As I've said strongly, I believe you can only be yourself,' Potter said after this draw. 'The players are confident. They are hard-working and respectful. They believe in themselves. They know it's a game of football that you have to earn the right to win.'

Next up for the Blues is a trip to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday. Potter has already made one ruthless decision by leaving Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang out of the squad.

'There's no point looking at it as a negative or positive,' Potter continued. 'It is what it is and you have to adapt. There's been lots of things over the last five months that have been suboptimal but there's no point complaining. It's just my job to deal with it. Often that is the case in these situations, especially the challenges we've had, but I'm really excited for the Champions League. I'm really excited for the rest of the season.

'The message for all the players is be ready because if the opportunity comes then you need to make sure you're ready to play. There's no point getting disappointed if you're not playing.'

Cucurella has become a target for Chelsea fans, perhaps because he is seen as Potter's pet, despite joining the club before the former Brighton manager.

His second-half exit was cheered by the visiting support, which will not do his confidence any good.

As for West Ham, they are on a mini-run, unbeaten in three and with a trip to Tottenham next. Manager David Moyes has eased the pressure on himself after coming close to the sack last month.

The Scot did not want to speak about the Soucek handball, which looked a clear penalty, although he did highlight that West Ham's late equaliser at Stamford Bridge in September was wrongly disallowed for a foul by Jarrod Bowen on keeper Edouard Mendy.

He added: 'You can never put that in comparison of what happened to us at Chelsea. Not even close.'
