The death toll in Italy for people who contracted coronavirus stands at 6,077, but there has been another daily drop in fatalities.
Italian authorities confirmed on Monday evening there was a total of 63,927 people who have or had COVID-19, 4,789 more than yesterday.
Deaths have risen by 601, but that is less than Sunday’s increase of 651, while 7,432 have fully recovered – 408 more since yesterday but a drop from Sunday’s tally of 958.
Among Monday’s batch of recoveries is Mattia, a 38-year-old male from the Lombardian town of Codogno and the first believed case of COVID-19 in Italy.
“Today, the downward trend is confirmed,” said welfare councillor for Lombardy, Giulio Gallera.
“We can say that this is the first positive day. It’s not the time to sing victory, but we can finally see light at the end of the tunnel.”
In total, 50,418 are reported to currently have the virus, with 3,204 in intensive care and 26,522 in self-isolation.
