Pep Guardiola doled out an expletive scolding to Manchester City gem Phil Foden last season, as revealed in a documentary produced by the club.
Guardiola ranted in front of the dressing room after City's 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace in December 2023, which left them three points off league leaders Liverpool.
As we know, City went on to recover their form and storm to a fourth consecutive league title, but the documentary title 'Together: 4-In-A-Row' gives insight into Guardiola's frayed emotions in a testing period not dissimilar to now.
City have lost four games in a row - a career-first for Guardiola - and will look to gain ground in the title race with games against Tottenham and Liverpool after the doc is released.
In the draw against Palace, City had led 2-0 but Jean-Philippe Mateta pulled a late goal back before Foden felled him in the penalty area in stoppage time - and Michael Olise duly converted the equaliser.
Guardiola was irate. 'Phil, in the f***ing 18-yard box, you don’t touch the opponent. It's unacceptable, Phil Foden, unacceptable!'
He shouted at the whole team: 'You are to apologise. You are teenagers. I say something when we drop points against Tottenham and Liverpool? I say something? Tell me. I blame you? I say something?
'Here (pointing at his head), use it. Here, you have to use it! F***ing hell. F***ing hell,' said Guardiola as he stalked around the room.
Despite his fiery demeanour, Guardiola admitted that he regrets how he sometimes acts towards his coterie of stars.
'I'm not really proud sometimes. Most of the times, right after the game when I am angry, for my emotions, to it to the players.
'I'm a human being and make mistakes and I don't like that. I don't like it.
'In that moment from 2-0 down, an unnecessary penalty, sometimes I cannot control myself either.'
City were susceptible to conceding late goals in that period, as Gary Lineker points out in the documentary.
In November, Nicolas Jackson had equalised in the 94th minute at Stamford Bridge to earn Chelsea a 4-4 draw.
Then, a couple of weeks later, Trent Alexander-Arnold equalised in the 80th minute at the Etihad Stadium, prompting his viral silencio celebration.
Things only got worse in December when Tottenham recovered from 3-1 down and rescued a draw thanks to a 90th-minute effort from Dejan Kulusevski.
By the time they had drawn to Palace, City had slipped to fourth in the table, though the margins were tight.
The parallels with their current predicament are striking, with City having led in two of the previous four games they have lost.
But they can also take confidence from knowing that they came back stronger from the punishing period last season - and, armed with a new contract, you can expect Guardiola to be just as invested as when he rebuked Foden.
