EFL members shocked by conduct of Sheffield Wednesday director John Redgate

Sheffield Wednesday's finance director John Redgate caused incredulity at the EFL AGM this week by arguing that clubs facing disciplinary proceedings should be given a right of veto over the composition of the independent panel hearing their case.

The timing of Wednesday's proposal was all the more extraordinary as it came just two days after the publication of the written reasons behind an independent panel's decision to impose a 12-point deduction on the club next season after finding them guilty of breaching financial rules and back-dating documents related to the sale of Hillsborough two years ago.

Wednesday are appealing against that punishment, but their proposal that in future clubs should effectively be able to choose the members of the jury hearing their cases was quickly dismissed.

Redgate's remarkable contribution came as he was speaking out against a minor regulation change proposed by the EFL under which the three members making up independent panels will be appointed by Sports Resolutions, the arbitration service retained by the League.

The only other stipulation regarding the constitution of independent panels is that the chairman must be a qualified barrister, solicitor or member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, with at least five years' experience.
