EPL unveils top 12 teenage talents in history, including Ronaldo, Rooney, and Bale

On July 27, the Premier League officially reviewed the 12 most outstanding teenage prodigies in history.

The Premier League has witnessed the rise of countless young talents, with many teenage prodigies emerging and subsequently achieving great success in their professional careers. Football writer Sam Cunningham has selected the 12 greatest teenage stars in Premier League history.

Nicolas Anelka made his debut at 18, then became a key figure in Arsenal's Premier League and FA Cup double in his first full season. The following year, he scored 17 goals in 35 league games, winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award. He then moved to Real Madrid, winning the Champions League, before returning to England to join Chelsea, where he won a second Premier League title, the Premier League Golden Boot, and two more FA Cups.

Bale made his debut for Southampton at just 16, playing in the Championship and for Wales, before being signed by Tottenham. He made his Tottenham debut shortly after turning 18, scoring two goals in his first three Premier League games, including a stunning free-kick against Arsenal in the North London Derby. Originally a left-back, Bale later excelled as a left winger, becoming one of the Premier League's top players, before moving to Real Madrid for a world-record fee.

Fàbregas made his Arsenal debut in the League Cup at 16 years and 177 days, becoming the club's youngest ever player, and then its youngest goalscorer two months later. Douman now holds both records at Arsenal – he debuted against Leeds United at 15 and scored his first Premier League goal at 16 years and 73 days. Fàbregas became a first-team regular under Arsene Wenger before turning 18, quickly establishing himself among the league's top midfielders. After winning the FA Cup with Arsenal and reaching the Champions League final, he went on to win league titles with Barcelona and Chelsea, and played a central role in the Spanish team that won two consecutive European Championships and a World Cup.

Foden made his Manchester City debut at just 17, winning the Premier League title that season. He has twice been named PFA Young Player of the Year and was the Golden Ball winner at the U17 World Cup. After becoming a regular starter under Pep Guardiola, Foden has amassed an impressive list of honors, including being a member of the 2022/23 treble-winning squad, and has now won six Premier League titles.

Robbie Fowler made his debut at 18, and the prolific striker quickly became a first-team regular. Within a few years, he scored 30+ goals in two consecutive seasons, establishing himself as one of the league's sharpest strikers. He became Liverpool's all-time leading Premier League scorer with 163 goals, a record later surpassed by Salah, and is currently ninth on the all-time Premier League scoring list.

Steven Gerrard made his Liverpool debut as a substitute at 18, establishing himself in midfield with his power, athleticism, and all-round technical ability. Within two years, he led the team to a treble of the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Cup. In his 17-year career at Anfield, he made over 700 appearances, winning the Champions League, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup, and three League Cups. Gerrard is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history.

Michael Owen scored on his debut at 17 at the end of the 1996/97 season, becoming Liverpool's youngest goalscorer. The following season he shone in the Premier League, winning the Golden Boot in two consecutive seasons. Within a few years, Owen won a treble of the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, and League Cup, and was awarded the Ballon d'Or for his outstanding performances. He eventually lifted the Premier League title with Manchester United.

Ronaldo joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon for a then-record fee for a teenage player, making his Premier League debut at 18. He won the FA Cup in his first season and subsequently developed into one of the greatest players of all time. He won three consecutive Premier League titles and the Champions League with Manchester United, earning the first of his five Ballon d'Or awards before continuing his dominance in Spain and Italy.

Rooney made his Premier League debut for Everton at 16, scoring a sensational goal against Arsenal, prompting commentator Clive Tyldesley to utter the classic line, "Remember the name: Wayne Rooney!" making him unforgettable. In his second season, he became a regular goalscorer for club and country, and never stopped thereafter. Rooney became only the third player to break the 200 Premier League goal mark, winning every honor at Manchester United and cementing his status as a football legend.

Saka joined the Arsenal academy at seven and made his first-team debut under Unai Emery at 17. Within a year, he became a regular starter under Mikel Arteta. Saka was central to Arteta's rebuilding project, helping to create one of the most consistent teams in the Premier League over the past five years, ultimately ending Arsenal's 22-year wait for a league title in the 2025/26 season.

Rashford burst onto the scene at 18, scoring twice on his Manchester United debut against Midtjylland in the Europa League. Three days later, he scored two goals within three minutes against Arsenal. Within just four months, he scored 8 goals in 18 appearances, winning the FA Cup, and performing so brilliantly that he was called up to England's Euro 2016 squad. The following season, he was a key member of the Manchester United team that won the League Cup and Europa League double, scoring 11 goals.

Bournemouth striker Krupi made history in his first Premier League season. At just 19, he became the first teenager in over two decades to score 10 goals in his debut season, and subsequently became the highest-scoring player in that category. His 13 goals in the 2025/26 season surpassed the previous record of 12 goals jointly held by Fowler of Liverpool and Robbie Keane of Coventry, placing him joint ninth in the league's scoring charts that season.
