Former Arsenal player Takehiro Tomiyasu will arrive in Amsterdam tonight and undergo a medical examination with Ajax tomorrow.

Tomiyasu will arrive in Amsterdam tonight and will undergo a medical examination by Ajax tomorrow. The free agent will sign a half-season performance contract in Amsterdam.

This versatile defender is regarded by Ajax as a candidate to strengthen the backline. During his tenure at Arsenal, Tomiyasu has fully demonstrated his ability to play both left and right full-back positions.

After undergoing knee surgery in February this year, he returned to Japan to recover from his injury. As a free agent, he was able to focus on rehabilitation training in his home country. Currently, the player's physical condition has returned to its peak level, but he has yet to regain his match rhythm. The last time he played in an official match was in October last year when he represented Arsenal against Southampton.

After joining, Tomiyasu will quickly join the team's joint training and gradually prepare for match appearances through training. The player himself is eager to return to the field as soon as possible. One of the goals of this 27-year-old defender is to be selected for the Japanese national team to compete in next year's World Cup, with the Netherlands being Japan's group stage opponent. If the cooperation between the two sides goes smoothly, this six-month contract is expected to be renewed this summer.

Considering his injury history, this signing is a "bold gamble" for Ajax, which is also the reason why the club initially offered him a six-month short-term contract. However, Ajax is still willing to take this risk. In the summer of 2021, Arsenal signed Tomiyasu from Bologna for 20 million euros. During his tenure with the Gunners, he played a total of 84 official matches, including 65 Premier League games.
