EXCLUSIVE: Manchester United considering stunning move for PSG keeper Donnarumma

Manchester United have the chance to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer - but as attractive as the deal sounds, making it happen looks complex.

The Italian goalkeeper, now in the final year of his contract at PSG, has been discussed in terms of a move to United as the French club move forward with plans to replace him. Talks over a new deal have stalled in Paris, and with Lucas Chevalier lined up as a successor, the opportunity is real.

United, however, are slightly stuck. Their failure to offload Andre Onana means there is no clear pathway to bring in another top-tier goalkeeper. The idea of carrying two premium-salaried, permanent stoppers was dismissed internally earlier this summer and reversing that stance now would mean tearing up their transfer plan.

There was also hope that Altay Bayindir would move on to free up a squad spot, but interest in the Turkish international has been limited.

United are currently at capacity in the goalkeeper department and are actively working out how to reshape things before they can commit to anything.

Internally, there is still a desire to bring in competition for Onana, if he can not be replaced immediately, in a bid to raise standards. The hope is that any new signing either pushes the current No.1 to rediscover form, or proves good enough to take the spot.

Given financial restrictions, a loan move for a goalkeeper could yet become a more realistic option, and it is one of the considerations behind a potential move for Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez.

Any temporary deal could yet prove a workable solution to help United through this goalkeeping dilemma.

The idea of Donnarumma in a United shirt definitely catches the imagination, but for now it seems little more than an idea.
