Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is still the highest paid director in the Premier League, with an annual income of £3.1 million.

Woodward's staggering pay packet is £1m less than 12 months ago but he remains the top earning chief in England, ahead of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy on £3m.

Accounts registered at Companies House revealed that United paid £6.8m to directors, including Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton, for the year ending June 30, 2019.

United finished sixth in the Premier League last season and failed to win a trophy, but Woodward's right to activate shares to reflect his service to the club saw him receive another bumper wage.

Woodward has worked for United since 2005 after helping the club's owners, the Glazer family, to secure their takeover of the club.

Despite United's problems on the pitch, their commercial success is unrivalled in world football, with revenue continuing to grow.

The club made a profit of £19m last year, though a lack of Champions League football this year is likely to see revenues drop this season.

United have amassed their huge income on the back of partnerships with over 50 global and regional sponsors.

But Woodward remains unpopular with large sections of the club's fanbase who have accused him of putting profit before on the pitch results.

The former accountant has overseen a troubled period in United's history following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

During that period the club have squandered hundreds of million pounds in transfer fees and sacked three different managers, while failing to win a single Premier League title.
