Ederson admits rival Alisson is 'one step ahead' in battle for Brazil No 1

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has admitted Alisson is the firm first-choice goalkeeper in the Brazilian national team as their rivalry moves from domestic to international football.

Alisson, who joined Liverpool in £67million summer move this summer, has been Brazil's No 1 goalkeeper for much of Tite's reign. As a result, Ederson has a solitary cap while Alisson boasts 32.

Following his arrival from Roma, Alisson is now competing with Ederson for the Premier League title as well and the two lined up on opposite ends of the pitch on Sunday for a top-of-the-table clash.

Ederson respects the similar paths that their careers have taken and acknowledges he must continue to work hard just to be Brazil's second-choice let alone to have a chance of overtaking him in the pecking order.

'I think there is a lot of similarity between the two of us, he is having a very positive start to the season at Liverpool,' Ederson told Globo Esporte.

'The goalkeeper position is cruel because only one of us can play, but we are both playing well in England. Here he is one step ahead of me, he played in a World Cup but that's not a reason to work less.

'Brazil is well served for goalkeepers, many who have not been to the World Cup are very good. Those who are picked will do a good job.'

With his profile rising all the time at Manchester City, Ederson revealed he will be given the chance to shine in the upcoming friendly with Saudi Arabia. However, the gloves will be handed back to Alisson for the crunch clash against rivals Argentina.

Any footballer worth their salt would prefer to play in the latter match, but Ederson is just grateful to get on the pitch.

'Yesterday, after training, Tite called to talk to me and Alisson and said that I would play the first game and Alisson the second,' Ederson revealed.

'I was very happy to have an opportunity to play a match with the Brazilian team.'
