The Japan national team officially announced that captain Endo would miss this World Cup due to injury, and Borussia Monchengladbach forward Machino Shuto was called up as a replacement. Meanwhile, Itakura Ko will serve as captain.

Yamamoto Masakuni, technical director of the Japan Football Association, released the news: "Endo has left the Japan national team. The coaching staff made this decision after communicating with the team doctor. The one who must feel the worst is Endo himself, and I also feel very bad."

Previously, the Japan national team conducted a two-hour closed training session, and Endo also resumed joint training. Earlier, Japan national team coach Moriyasu Hajime also said in an interview that the team doctor believed Endo could play in the first World Cup match, but Endo ultimately missed the World Cup.

After Endo withdrew from the Japan national team roster, the Japan Football Association announced the call-up of Borussia Monchengladbach forward Machino Shuto, and Itakura Ko will serve as the captain of the Japan national team. Japan will play their first group stage match against the Netherlands in Dallas at 04:00 (CEST) on June 15, Beijing time.
