Gareth Southgate's backroom team is being streamlined as part of a major restructure of the performance and technical departments at St George's Park.

The FA have no plans to replace either head of strategy Dave Reddin or psychologist Dr Pippa Grange, who both left high-profile positions with the organisation this summer. Their roles will go to existing members of staff and several departments, such as sports science and medicine, will be merged.

FA technical director Les Reed is leading the reorganisation after spending six months assessing staffing and performance following his appointment in February.

The FA insisted on Monday night that the changes are not due to cost-cutting but acknowledged that a streamlining process is under way.

Many of Grange's responsibilities as the FA's senior sports psychologist have already been passed on to Dr Ian Mitchell, who was recruited from the FA of Wales last year having worked with Chris Coleman's side during their successful run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

Reddin's departure will see a more senior role for Bryce Cavanagh, the head of physical performance and nutrition.

Southgate is happy with the changes, which could end up increasing his influence, and has formed a good relationship with Reed. The former Southampton vice-chairman was at St George's Park on Monday watching England train ahead of Saturday's European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria.

Southgate, meanwhile, has added former England left back Chris Powell to his team for Euro 2020.

The 49-year-old joins as part of the FA's programme to address the under-representation of black, Asian and other ethnic minority coaches. Former Birmingham defender Michael Johnson, 46, who recently coached Guyana, will work with the Under 21s.
