England captain Harry Kane is not at all happy with the Three Lions' fans after a large number of them booed Manchester United defender Harry Maguire before and during the win over Ivory Coast.
England won 3-0 on the night, with goals from Raheem Sterling, Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings, but the big talking point hasn't been the three goals, the clean sheet or Sergie Aurier's first-half sending off for the visitors, it has been the abuse taken by Maguire from his own fans.
There had been much discussion among followers of the English national team over whether Maguire deserved to keep his place in the side on the basis of his recent club performances, but Gareth Southgate chose to stay loyal to a player who has been a big part of his plans for years and was at the heart of England's defence for the runs to the 2018 World Cup semi-final and Euro 2020 final.
The head coach's decision didn't go down too well with a section of the Wembley support who booked Maguire's name on two occasions when it was announced before kick-off, and then again when the 29-year-old took his first touches during the game.
In defence of Maguire
Maguire's boss and teammates have leapt to his defence, with Spurs striker and national team captain Kane being one of the most vocal in condemning the fans' behaviour.
"We've worked hard to rebuild our connection with England fans in the last few years so to hear Harry Maguire booed at Wembley before kick off was just not right," tweeted Kane after the game.
"The fact that he's been brilliant on the pitch and given us all so many great memories makes it even harder to understand.
"He doesn't deserve that reception. He's got full support in the changing room and should have the same from every England fan."
The playing squad are presenting a united front on this, with Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice among the others who gave Maguire their backing and strongly criticised the fans.

Maybe you didn't mean that but there are a lot of Man Utd fans making him the scapegoat. Maguire for me is a technically good player but he's not a Rolls Royce defender. He's like a John Stones/Benjamin White type of player. Good on the ball but not without a few defensive flaws. And unfortunately his defensive flaws are more exposed at Man Utd because of the weak system. At England, he's a quality CB because he has more support from the midfield

Im sorry but its totally right, fans can and must express their dissatisfaction with Maguire’s performances. And to be honest, i’m mad too, he costed £80-90M and has an extremely high salary, but yet he is not justifying his cost in games. We are talking about the most expensive CB in the world... For me there’s nothing to do, he’s not good and never was even before buying him. I don’t like this player, for me he should be sold.

Messi ,Cr7,Neymar and other players gets it to ! Does that make fans hate them ? No! they are booed because at some point their playing is below bar performance and it affects the game but the players head up and give their best on the pitch and win back the fans. Not that I hate Maguire but from a coach's perspective, there has to be only one loyalty and that's towards your country. Emotions should be kept aside and you do what is best for your country, pick from the pool of players who are in the zone. There are always going to be hard decisions but I feel this is not the right one, which is to play Maguire. It's unfair to him and to the country.
