Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez was asked about his future at Stamford Bridge following the Blues' Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain
Enzo Fernandez hinted at uncertainty over his Chelsea future with a coy "we'll see" response following the Blues' Champions League elimination at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. The west London club were powerless to overturn a 5-2 deficit at Stamford Bridge, slumping to a 3-0 home defeat to crash out of Europe.
With Liam Rosenior now tasked with rallying his squad for a final push to secure Champions League qualification, attention has swiftly turned to the future of one of his key men. Fernandez, who arrived at the club for £106.8million as one of BlueCo's early acquisitions, finds himself at the centre of growing uncertainty surrounding the club's direction.
"I don't know, there are eight games left and the FA Cup. There's the World Cup and then we'll see," Fernandez is reported to have said on ESPN Argentina.
Fernandez has previously been linked with PSG and Real Madrid. Those rumours are now likely to ramp up following his comments.
The World Cup winner captained the side in Reece James' absence against PSG and has been a pivotal figure in Chelsea's campaign this season. The 25-year-old has contributed an impressive 12 goals and six assists in 45 appearances this term.
The midfielder made no secret of his frustration at Filip Jorgensen's blunder in the first-leg defeat to PSG, yet his manager Rosenior, has drawn comparisons between his winning mentality and that of Roy Keane.
"As a player with passion, he wants to win. Roy Keane did that, probably," Rosenior said. "Roy Keane was my manager, but Roy Keane as a player probably did that 20 times a game. I want a team with a culture of accountability where we can demand from each other in the moment.
"Enzo loves Filip, Enzo wants the best for him, Enzo believes in him. In that moment he was frustrated with something that happened, and that's normal, isn't it?".
When questioned about the remarks following the defeat to PSG, Rosenior said: "Firstly, I haven't seen that.
"It's hard for me to speak on speculation after a game and I need to focus right now on the most important things, which is making sure we get a result against Everton on Saturday."
Fernandez played a key role in Chelsea's Conference League and Club World Cup triumphs last summer, yet the Blues have struggled to build on those achievements this campaign.
The West London club are once again battling for a top-four finish, with their only realistic shot at silverware coming in the FA Cup, where they take on Port Vale in the quarter-final.
Speaking last month, Fernandez expressed pride in his time at Stamford Bridge. "The truth is that I'm really proud of my three years here," he said.
"Because I arrived at a very difficult time for the club with many changes and coaches coming and going, but I'm happy with how things are going. Even though there has been a recent change of coach, football is always like this. I try to adapt to whatever the team needs at any given moment to help the club.
"I always give my all every day to help my team-mates. I feel like I'm doing very well on a personal level, and hopefully we'll end this season with one or two trophies."

Let him leave. He has no direct impact in our game. We have Andrey Santos, Lavia and Caceido who are more impactful in our games than him. Lets collect cash from his sell and invest in a prolific striker like Osemhin

Mercenary Enzo, so it is time to move on.... Shame shame shame... I thought when the going gets tough, the tough gets going and not chicken out. So all of you are just mercenaries disguising as "blues". Where is that spirit that never dies till it is impossible to continue? Anyways just wait and help us beat Man City then we can waive you bye or come join us at Emirates. We are ready to take you and reform you as others....you gerrit? [Crylaugh][Crylaugh][Crylaugh]

These reporters like to twist things. Enzo Fernandes' future have been up in the air long before the PSG match. If he leaves it's because of other ambitions, not the PSG defeat ...LoL

Enzo might be kidding, is he now blaming anyone else when he is the one to be blamed, he teaches all these players to play football as if they're fighting a World War3, shame on him.
