Leo, when you said you were going to retire from the national team, I was truly very sad.

At that time, I was just a young boy, calculating your age and mine, wondering if I would ever be able to play alongside you. It might seem a little silly now, but I really did that: I would think about how many years you had left in your career, how long it would be before I could play for the senior team, and then I'd fantasize that, even just once, we could fight side-by-side in an Argentina jersey.

Fortunately, you came back.

And life eventually became much better than that young boy could have ever imagined.

Not only did I actually play with you, but we also trained together, shared the locker room, chatted, hugged, went through difficult times and wonderful moments together, and ultimately became world champions together.

But most importantly, I will always be grateful for how you treated me from the moment I joined the national team.

At that time, I was full of anticipation, dreaming of playing with my idol, but I met someone who made me feel like I was part of the team from day one. You were always willing to say something to me, give me advice, give me a hug, or simply, in your own way, make me feel at ease when I needed it.

I will never forget these things.

Today, it's hard for me to imagine the next national team training camp without you. Walking onto the field and not seeing you in the number 10 jersey in front of me. For so many years, I've seen you there, so now it's almost impossible to imagine a different picture.
