Christian Eriksen has clearly been getting stuck-in to international duty, as he shows off a mysterious black eye.

The Danish midfielder has joined his compatriots ahead of their meeting with Northern Ireland on Friday in Copenhagen, before a trip to Ljubljana to take on Slovenia on Monday.

With the Premier League season over, he has been training with Denmark, but has managed to pick up a nasty looking injury to his eye.

Eriksen was pictured with surgical type above his left eye socket, with purple bruising on his eye lid.

Despite the clearly painful injury he seemed unperturbed as he posed smiling for pictures on the Danish FA's Instagram account.

They posted a picture of the United midfielder doing floor exercises holding up both thumbs and smiling for the camera, with the caption: 'He's been sewed up and is ready.'

He also posted a selfie showing off his eye, writing: 'And everything is ok'.

The player seemed to suggest that the issue may have arisen in training, after posting a picture on his Instagram of the team's open training session, and apologising for not signing autographs as he had to get sewn up.

As well as being among the most famous Danish players in the world, Eriksen perhaps holds a place in many supporters' hearts as a result of his shock collapse during the European Championship in 2021.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening fixture at the tournament in June 2021, leaving the sporting world in shock after suddenly collapsing on the pitch.

Thanks to the speed of Denmark's medical staff and the life-saving operation he underwent in hospital, Eriksen made a full recovery and was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) device - which has not only allowed him to continue living but also to carry on playing football.

After his shock collapse he left Inter - where he was playing at the time - joining Brentford the following January on a short-term deal, before United sealed a free transfer in summer 2022.
