Everton are to open talks with England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford over a new contract.

Pickford, who played a crucial role in Everton surviving relegation from the Premier League, is under contract at the club until 2024.

Everton's hierarchy are in agreement that the 28-year-old deserves a new deal, despite the continuing uncertainty over who might own Merseyside outfit before the season starts.

The Toffees are keen to tie Pickford down to fresh terms following his superb end to the season, which included an incredible save to deny Cesar Azpilicueta in his side's 1-0 win over Chelsea in May.

Pickford has established himself as England's No 1 ahead of the World Cup in Qatar in November and December.

He has faced considerable criticism throughout his career but went some way to answering those with a string of fine displays towards the end of last season.

Everton avoided dropping down into the Championship, which would have likely seen a mass exodus of players from Goodison Park, including Pickford.

Newcastle had been linked with the goalkeeper before they opted to sign Nick Pope, one of Pickford's rivals for the England No 1 shirt, for £10million.

Aaron Ramsdale has also put pressure on Pickford for the England role after his impressive performances for Arsenal.

Everton are in talks with Tottenham over a deal for Richarlison, which the north London club expect to go through within the next 24 hours.
