FA allay Wembley pitch fears as they say it doesn't need repairing

The FA are confident the appearance of Wembley’s pitch will improve in time without the need for drastic repairs.

Large areas of brown grass have been clearly visible during Tottenham’s last two games at the national stadium against Barcelona and Cardiff but the FA insist that is a colouration issue and does not affect play.

Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight title fight against Alexander Povetkin on September 22 is the cause, with the plastic sheets that were laid to support the ring shielding the grass from sunlight.

There is a large square of affected area surrounding the centre circle and along the touchlines.

Wembley’s pitch is very resilient due to its hybrid combination of synthetic and real grass and the FA have no concerns over its suitability to host football in the near future.

Spurs, who had planned to be playing at the new White Hart Lane by now, do not return to Wembley until facing Manchester City on October 29 and the brown areas are expected to have cleared.

However, it is anticipated that the remnants of American football markings will be visible for that game, as three NFL matches are taking place at Wembley in the next three weeks. This Sunday Seattle Seahawks take on Oakland Raiders, with Tennessee Titans against LA Chargers the following weekend, and Philadelphia Eagles versus Jacksonville Jaguars on October 28.

End zone logos of the Eagles and Jaguars and pitch markings are still likely to be visible for the Spurs game the following day.

Spurs are scheduled to face PSV Eindhoven on November 6 and Inter on November 28 at Wembley in the Champions League but the club have not yet confirmed the location of their Premier League fixture against Chelsea on November 24 as work continues on their new ground.
