Fans in awe after Spain's performance in their 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica

Spain have been widely praised on social media after opening their World Cup with a 7-0 win over Costa Rica.

Ferran Torres bagged a brace as six different Spain players got on the scoresheet, as Barcelona youngster Gavi providing the best of them with a classy volley.

The result puts Spain in a commanding position at the top of Group E, especially after rivals Germany lost to Japan.

'Spain Look scary right now', tweeted one awed fan after the stunning result for Luis Enrique's side.

Another made the obligatory comparison to DJ Khaled's 'another one' catchphrase as they kept on scoring, while others made sarcastic comments about how Costa Rica 'had them worried for long stretches' in the one-sided game.

There was caution from some fans that the result had come against fairly weak opposition, with one warning that 'sterner tests lie ahead for them'.

Costa Rica did make it to quarter finals in 2014, but will struggle to come close to that in Qatar after such a deflating start to the tournament.

They could still have an influence on proceedings, with their game against Germany likely to have an impact on qualification.

Costa Rica are next in action against Japan on Sunday, while Spain will face Germany later that day.
