Fans insist Edouard Mendy is 'NOT a top goalkeeper' after crucial errors

Fans have taken to social media to share their views after Edouard Mendy made a pair of crucial errors as Senegal were defeated by Holland in their World Cup opener.

Entering the tournament off the back of an excellent individual campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations last year as Senegal lifted the trophy for the first time, the Chelsea goalkeeper has long been the undisputed first choice in Aliou Cisse's squad.

However, in his World Cup debut the French-born stopper made two costly mistakes as his side fell to a late loss.

With the game reaching its closing stages, Mendy attempted to claim a cross inside his box but mistimed his run and was beaten to the ball by Dutch star Cody Gakpo who opened the scoring.

Then, as the game entered the eighth minute of added time, Mendy failed to control an innocuous-looking strike from Memphis Depay, palming the ball directly into the route of the oncoming Davy Klaassen who converted to secure the win for the Netherlands.

Following the game, supporters took to social media to lament the 30-year-old's poor performance.

@jamiewilkinson wrote: 'The downfall of Edouard Mendy is a sad sight. Reality is that he was performing above the mean, he’s not a top goalkeeper. If he is, as reported, playing hardball over wages, he ought to have a serious rethink about whether he’ll ever play at this level after leaving Chelsea…'

One user compared Mendy to Qatar goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb who endured a torrid afternoon in the host nation's opening day defeat to Ecuador.

Another wrote on Twitter: 'Mendy went from a complete unknown to FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year to a genuine liability in the space of like 3 years.'

@lewdawg added: 'I genuinely think mendy had the craziest purple patch in history because this guy is not a goalkeeper i'm sorry'

A Chelsea fan wrote: 'Mendy clearly isn’t good enough to be our N1 right now but I just know if we sell him he will turn incredible again.'

Another added: 'What happened to Mendy man. At one point he was being called the best GK in world football. It's sad to see how quick his decline was'

Under Thomas Tuchel Mendy had started Chelsea's campaign this season with his number one spot at the club intact.

However, a run of poor form combined with the arrival of Graham Potter saw him replaced by a resurgent Kepa Arrizabalaga between the sticks at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard started six consecutive Premier League games, recording three clean sheets before suffering an injury as the club were defeated by Brighton last month.
