Manchester City thrashed Burton Albion 9-0 on Wednesday but only a half-empty Etihad stadium was there to see it.

Fans took the opportunity to mock the Premier League champions on social media for the turnout during the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.

One football supporter said: 'Manchester City and Empty stadium are Synonyms.'

Former England international Gary Lineker also weighed in after Kevin de Bruyne broke the deadlock: 'De Bruyne nods in from close range. Manchester City might score more goals than than there are spectators tonight.'

People continued to mock Pep Guardiola's side despite their emphatic victory with one person saying: 'All 678 fans seem to be having a great time tonight in the etihad stadium.'

The City supporters who didn't attend missed out on Gabriel Jesus scoring four and Kevin de Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez all getting on the scoresheet.

The Manchester club are often mocked for their lack of stadium atmosphere and one person said: 'It's the year 2058 Manchester City are yet to fill a stadium and get the "atmosphere".'

Guardiola will be hoping that more supporters will turn up to their clash against Wolves on Monday.

The champions will be looking to close a four-point gap on league leaders Liverpool.
