Wayne Rooney has been mercilessly mocked on Twitter after posting a humorous throwback picture of himself with some of his former Manchester United team-mates.

Rooney and the likes of Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand were compared to boy bands Backstreet Boys and Blazing Squad after the DC United striker uploaded the retro photo from 2005.

In the image, he and the rest of the group - also comprising John O'Shea and Alan Smith -  could be seen wearing baggy jeans, white trainers and knitted jumpers and other dodgy attire as they made their way to the United Christmas party.

Team-mate at club and country, Rio Ferdinand, was also sporting cornrows in the picture.

Posted with a laughing emoji and the hashtag #tbt (throwback Thursday), the tweet quickly went viral and was the subject of hundreds of amusing responses.

Alongside the comparisons to pop groups, one user also wrote: 'Buzzing for a group of lads to recreate this on Halloween.'

Another added: 'I hope you all wear better jeans these days.'

Rooney enjoyed a hugely successful 13-year stint at Old Trafford before returning to his boyhood club Everton in the summer of 2017.

The fairytale return, however, quickly went sour, and he was allowed to join DC United in July.

Despite the setback, Rooney has made a vibrant start to life at DC United, scoring nine times and assisting a further six goals in just 14 starts.
