Fans have poured to social media to ridicule Emerson Royal after his humiliating no-look pass fail during Tottenham's 1-1 draw against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Footage shows the Brazilian attempting to play a through ball to Bryan Gil whilst looking away from his team-mate, which causes the overhit pass to go behind for a goal kick.

The 1-1 home draw was not enough for Tottenham to secure qualification to the Champions League knockout stage, and now the group leaders must win their final match against Marseille to guarantee their place in the last 16.

Royal, who has frequently been criticised by some supporters for his below-par performances at right-back under Antonio Conte this season, has since become the target of ruthless mocking on social media.

One fan posted on Twitter: 'I've seen some crazy things in my life but seeing Emerson Royal attempt a no-look pass which goes straight off the pitch has to be the worst.'

Another reacted by tweeting: 'I actually laughed out loud this morning making my coffee at the thought of that Emerson Royal no-look pass. I can't believe he tried it... and got it wrong! Incredible.'

A third said: 'Emerson Royal and his fancy no-look pass... then shanks the ball out. He's not the one... absolute garbage.'

A handful of Arsenal fans saw it as a golden opportunity to rub salt in the wounds of their bitter rivals following the disappointing home draw.

One person said: 'Still grateful that (Mikel) Arteta chose (Takehiro) Tomiyasu over Emerson Royal, that lad is so bad. Watching that no-look pass was pure comedy.'

Another tweeted: 'Emerson Royal paid £1million to do a no look pass of the pitch'.

Tottenham strengthened at right-back this summer by bringing in former Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence for £12.5million to join Royal and Matt Doherty in the position.

The 22-year-old has yet to start a match for Spurs so far this campaign, earning three substitute appearances off the bench in the Premier League.

Conte's side travel to Bournemouth on Saturday ahead of next week's crucial Champions League showdown against Marseille.
