Fans have slammed Chelsea after the club sent out a mass email describing their trip to Boston as a 'fantastic success' despite Ruben Loftus-Cheek suffering an injury that could rule him out for a year.

The newsletter dropped into the inboxes of thousands of Chelsea fans on Thursday, hours after their 3-0 win over MLS side New England Revolution in the Final Whistle on Hate friendly in the United States.

It was entitled 'Boston trip proves to be a fantastic success' before leading on a story about defender David Luiz hailing the arrival of new signing Christian Pulisic.

Although Chelsea won the match, it was overshadowed by the ruptured Achilles injury suffered by midfielder Loftus-Cheek.

The England international left the Gillette Stadium on crutches with his foot in a protective boot having limped off 20 minutes into the second-half.

The 23-year-old will not only miss Chelsea's UEFA Europa League final against Arsenal in Baku on May 29 and England's Nations League campaign next month but could be out for the whole of next season.

Loftus-Cheek could not put any weight on his left foot and needed the help of two members of the Chelsea staff to leave the pitch.

The England midfielder had scans on the injury in America before Chelsea returned to England on Thursday.

He was due to have further tests in London, with an official timeline being put on his recovery once he has received confirmation of the results.

Understandably, Loftus-Cheek was left frustrated — not just by the timing of the cruel blow but also the circumstances, an avoidable injury coming in a friendly game.

He had finally managed to overcome a niggling back problem and establish himself in Chelsea's first team.

As important as the cause was — Chelsea helped raise £3.1million for the fight against anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination — losing another key player to injury still dampened the occasion.

And fans on Twitter were upset about Chelsea's choice of words in calling the occasion a 'fantastic success'.
