Fantasy football expert who revealed Jack Grealish's injury built his own bot to beat the system

A Fantasy Football expert who caused a major upset when he publicised star Jack Grealish's shin injury has been revealed as an Aston Villa fan from Norway known only as Henning - who is 'sorry, not sorry'.

Premier League club Aston Villa had been trying to hide midfielder Grealish's injury before three Villa players and two support staff removed the team captain from their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) line-ups.

By unwittingly giving out real team news that the 25-year-old was unlikely to play, then highlighted by Henning's Twitter account FPL Insider, they gave Leicester City time to prepare tactically and beat Villa 2-1.

Furious Villa management banned its players and staff from participating in the FPL, the official fantasy league game run by the Premier League, while Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola called it 'unethical'.

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith called for an investigation into the leak, after Leicester's manager Brendan Rodgers admitted he heard rumours about Grealish's fitness before the match on social media.

However, Henning - a 32-year-old Villa supporter who set up Twitter account FPL Insider earlier this month - has refused to apologise for publicising when a footballer has transferred a player out of their fantasy team.

In an interview with BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat, he explained how his bot monitors all FPL accounts by current Premier League players and support staff - and then tweets changes in the squads to help FPL users change their line-ups.

'I can understand the frustration, but this is already available information,' Henning said. 'I'm just structuring it and packaging it in tweets.'

He suspects Premier League clubs may already use this information themselves, saying: 'They know that opposition players play fantasy football weekly and I would imagine big clubs all have some kind of analyst that has access to this data already.'

FPL rules state that a user must finalise the team 90 minutes before the first match of a Premier League round starts.

The Associated Press reported that Villa players Matt Targett, Conor Hourihane and Neil Taylor updated their FPL squads by removing Grealish from the line-up.

The squads on FPL can be viewed by the other seven million users, which includes Premier League players from rival clubs who also use the platform.

These changes were then picked up by FPL Insider and tweeted to 25,000 followers.

Speaking to the BBC, Henning said: 'I wondered if it was possible to check if Premier League players or staff connected to clubs had made any transfers in the FPL game.

'At the start it was very manual and tedious. I had to spend hours on Google, LinkedIn and Football Manager 21 to find staff and even junior players.

'It's a lot different between the clubs because some of the clubs have almost official team leagues. Wolves have a league where it's basically all the first team players.

'Everton had funny names that you really had to be clever to find out who they were.'

Villa manager Smith said after the Leicester City match: 'I was made aware that it came out on social media outlining (Grealish) wasn't going to play.

'And, if it's coming out of our training ground, I will find out where that's coming from and reprimand who it's coming from. We'll certainly get to the bottom of this.'

Though FPL does not stop players from using it, the terms and conditions page on the website says 'employees (and immediate family members) of The Football Association Premier League Limited (the 'Premier League') may enter the Game but are ineligible to win any Prizes. If such a person would otherwise win a Prize, the Prize shall be awarded to the next placed Player'.
