Sir Alex Ferguson played an important role in bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford this past summer, just as cross-city rivals Manchester City looked to be closing in on the forward.
The 36-year-old's Juventus exit was clear before his destination had been settled, but he initially appeared set to join Pep Guardiola at City only for a late change.
"A lot of people played their part to bring Ronaldo back [to Manchester United]," Ferguson told Viaplay. "I contributed knowing that he really wanted to come here, and that was important.
"I wouldn't say it's emotional, but it's exciting and a relief because I couldn't imagine him playing for Manchester City. I don't think anybody could.
"That's why we took steps to make sure he came here. The club pursued him well, I spoke to the Glazers and then it was done.
"I think he'll have an impact on the young players in particular. He has the experience to handle situations."
