Carlo Ancelotti is facing an anxious wait to know if he will be able to select Ferland Mendy for Real Madrid in the Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain, with the French international suffering an injury which leaves him in doubt.
Having been described as a muscular issue within his adductor, Mendy's ailment could well keep him out of the first leg against the Ligue 1 leaders, with Real Madrid's concern over this matter reaching the highest level.
It is two weeks before the meeting on February 15, and he will almost certainly miss the match against Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey, and the LaLiga Santander encounters with Villarreal and Granada before the Champions League returns.
Mendy could also miss a potential Copa del Rey semi-final should Real Madrid make it to the competition's last four.
Ancelotti would be losing one of his most important players, and it is in a position where there isn't an alternative option who plays at a similar level.
Marcelo, Nacho and Alaba
Mendy had to overcome two injuries which delayed his start tot he season, and he didn't make his first appearance until October 19, 2021. And before that, Ancelotti cycled through Alaba, Miguel Gutierrez and Nacho, with Marcelo also out injured.
Since then, Mendy has played virtually every match this term - missing just three games - with the lack of trust in Marcelo, Nacho and David Alaba manifesting itself in Ancelotti's team selections, yet the Italian will now have to turn to one of those names.
