Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has undergone heart surgery after being diagnosed with a rhythm disorder.

The 66-year-old, who is now in charge of Serie A side Lazio, had reportedly been scheduled to undergo the minor operation for some time.

Sarri had been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm problem.

Symptoms include an irregular heartbeat, heart palpitations, chest pain or tightness, and feeling short of breath, lightheaded, dizzy.

Sarri underwent transcatheter ablation surgery, a procedure aimed at destroying the faulty electrical tissue.

'SS Lazio announces that coach Maurizio Sarri, following a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation, underwent transcatheter ablation surgery using PFA technology at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic,' a Lazio statement read.

'The surgery, performed by Professor Andrea Natale, an international pioneer with over thirty years of experience in treating this condition, was successful.

'The SS Lazio team doctor, Dr. Italo Leo, was present at the event.

'The coach will resume regular management of the team in the next few days.

'SS Lazio and the Coach thank the Policlinico Tor Vergata and Professor Natale's team for their high level of professionalism and the quality of care they provide to all patients every day.'

According to the Gazzetta Dello Sport, Sarri was expected to remain in hospital for 24 hours following the operation.

The Italian coach is expected to make a shift return to work following the operation.

Sarri is reportedly due to miss three days of training, which will be led by his assistant Marco Ianni, but he could return as soon as Friday.

It is possible Sarri could take charge of their next match against his former club Napoli on Sunday.

Lazio are currently eighth in Serie A with Sarri's side winning six, drawing six and losing five of their matches this season.

Sarri is in his second spell at Lazio having rejoined the club in the summer, 15 months after resigning from the role.

Chelsea are among Sarri's former clubs with the Italian having led the Blues to the Europa League in 2019, a year before he guided Juventus to the Serie A title.
