Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has countered the validity of Gary Neville's view on Everton's goal against Manchester United in the 1-1 draw.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin collided with United goalkeeper David de Gea in the penalty box before the ball bounced in off of Victor Lindelof for an unfortunate own goal for the hosts.
The incident was looked at by VAR but any fears for Everton that it would be chalked off were brushed aside.
But should the goal have stood? The Premier League explained during the contest that the goal stood due to the fact that Calvert-Lewin's coming together with De Gea was 'normal contact'.
United legend Gary Neville was furious at the time and had this to say: "I'm surprised. Usually, a goalkeeper gets that when the arm gets put across them.
"I did think initially that even on the replay David de Gea should have been stronger but he did have that arm on him. He didn't complain that much, David de Gea. It's just that left arm from Calvert-Lewin. I am surprised that hasn't been given but he did need to be stronger, the goalkeeper."
Former referee Gallagher has since backed up the Premier League's viewpoint with his thoughts on Sky Sports' Ref Watch this morning.
"I honestly don't think it's a foul. When you watch it, De Gea comes out and flaps at the ball. They [De Gea and Calvert-Lewin] are both in the air and Calvert-Lewin does have an arm across him, but the ball is gone. There's going to be inevitable contact at this point," Gallagher told Sky Sports .
"I think the contact has happened afterwards. He's come out and flapped at the ball for whatever reason, they're both in the air and there is going to be a collision, there's no doubt about that, but I think it happens after the ball has gone past him."

That goal should not have stood. It's because of Calvert-Lewin's contact that's why De Gea missed the ball. De Gea had to turn his face away, and that's why he missed the ball. It's a simple as that.

you are unqualified to be a referee to say that it was not a foul only to protect VAR shame

There were 2 fouls done by Everton players in the penalty box, the referee has not enough experience and why VAR did not take actions with the referees

The Everton striker never got the ball, but did crash into de gea, inside the 6 yard box. And they say it wasn't a penalty. Who's watching the VAR. Someone who knows nothing about football.
sorry foul not penalty

That goal should have been disallowed. So what Dermort is saying, in another scenario. e,g.You are in the penalty area you shoot at goal and miss, second later I kick you. But because you missed the goal its not a penalty. WTF.

If you look up the meaning of gullible you'll see a picture of a P/L- Referee they get conned so many times it's a wonder they know anything about the rules of the game (players get pushed over they go down holding their head just to get the game stopped and the Refs fall for the CON!!) it's got to be stamped out of the game

The problem is that these old referees will always agree with every mistakes that are made on the pitch....... it's as if they are paid by referees association.

I wonder if you are not paid to fix some matches

Mr. Gallagher if you are not drunk, you may have smoked something. All of you former refs. always agree with whatever rubbish mistakes your fellow refs make. That was a clear foul & you just don’t want to speak the truth that they made a mistake. Even those responsible with this var thing sometimes they don’t see a foul while in other matches the same offense is seen as a foul. Or maybe there are clubs you like more than others

Is over guys.. we should win without even complaining about referee. We should be winning small teams flawlessly but we struggle so much with them
