Former England international Eni Aluko has called time on her 18-year career.

The 32-year-old announced her retirement on social media on Wednesday morning.

'My dear friend football, it's time to hang up my boots and retire as a professional footballer,' she wrote alongside a link to her full letter on The Players' Tribune.

'Thank you football for everything you've given and taught me. Thanks for the full circle moments & crazy unexpected journey.'

In her letter she admits to nearly quitting the game back in 2012, at the age of 25, only for her experience at London 2012 to convince her to keep playing on.

She also touches upon the problems she has had to tackle, including racism and abuse on social media.

In 2017, Aluko accused former England boss Mark Sampson of racism, over comments he made about the striker's family.

Sampson was subsequently sacked by the FA, and he eventually apologised to her in 2019 in an interview with The Times.

Aluko began her senior career at Birmingham and went on to win the FA Women's Super League three times with Chelsea as well as Serie A and Coppa Italia with Juventus.

The forward earned 102 caps for the Lionesses between 2004 and 2016, in which she scored 33 goals.
