Former PL star insists Mount will be 'questioning his decision' to join Man Utd

Mason Mount is sure to be ruing his decision to join Manchester United this summer, according to a former Premier League defender.

Mount became the first to join United this summer in a deal worth up to £60million from boyhood club Chelsea, having been made Erik ten Hag's priority transfer target.

However, it has been far from the perfect start at his new club, with his opening few games disrupted by injury problems that kept him out of action from mid-August to late September.

The England midfielder has played in just six games in all competitions for the Red Devils, registering no goals and only a single assist in the Carabao Cup.

His former club, Chelsea, are in fact still a point worse off at this point in the season, but with United sat just 10th in the table, the former Premier League star suggested that players sign for United 'to challenge for major honours'.

‘At the moment he will be,' Glen Johnson told Betfred when asked whether Mount will be regretting his decision to join United. 'Manchester United are a very big football club, but you don’t join them in the expectation that you’re going to be part of a team that’s tenth in the Premier League.

‘You only want to go there to challenge for major honours, and I know that Chelsea aren’t in a better position at this very moment, but you don’t move to Old Trafford in the expectation that you’re going to struggle.

‘I don’t know why he decided to leave Chelsea, but I’m sure he’s questioning his decision at this very moment.’

While Ten Hag's work at United in his debut season was largely praised, with the club winning the Carabao Cup, reaching the final of the FA Cup and returning to the Champions League, his second campaign has begun poorly.

The Red Devils have won four and lost four of their opening eight Premier League games, with their most recent victory coming only courtesy of two stoppage time goals from Scott McTominay.

The signing of Mount has upset the balance of Ten Hag's favoured 4-2-3-1, with captain Bruno Fernandes often now moved to the right to allow either Mount or Christian Eriksen to play in behind the striker.

Yet Mount's early struggles have not deterred his manager in claiming that the 24-year-old can become a key figure at the club, with Ten Hag telling United's official website: 'He can be a big part [of what we are creating here].

'He can play in that game by supplying, making the connections, making the link-ups for those in the front line.

'He has abilities to give that [energy] and to supply our front players by combinations.'

In addition to his creative attributes, Ten Hag stressed that Mount is also capable of helping the team with his work off the ball, helping out in defence and in breaking up counter attacks.

'Also in his moments of defence transition, in defending and pressing he can be and he is already a great player for us because he puts a lot of effort in.

'When we get better connections [in the team], that will grow.'
