Former Spurs star David Ginola: out-of-favour Dele Alli needs a new challenge

Tottenham legend David Ginola believes Paris Saint-Germain would be the perfect club for out-of-favour midfielder Dele Alli to start a new challenge.

Alli has found regular game time under manager Jose Mourinho hard to come by this season. He started Spurs' opening fixture against Everton, but he was subbed off at half-time in a 1-0 defeat.

He's since dropped down the pecking order, and only played 21 minutes of their incredible 6-1 victory against Manchester United.

There's been plenty of speculation linking him with a loan move to PSG, but no agreement has been made with the transfer window closing tonight.

Ginola, who played for Spurs and PSG, believes Alli was a shadow of his former self at Old Trafford, and is in desperate need of a new challenge.

The Frenchman told Sky Sports: 'When he came on in the second half you could see that he was very cautious about not losing the ball and not trying many special things like he is capable of doing on the football pitch.

'Doing that in Paris would be a new challenge for him. I don't see why not. We haven't had many English players playing for Paris Saint-Germain in the past so it would be interesting to see that.'

Ginola added that there's simply too much competition in the Spurs squad now for Alli to hold down a regular place.

'For Spurs with [Heung-min] Son, [Harry] Kane, [Gareth] Bale – if he wants to play there with these three or four players – he needs to improve his game.

'He needs to be consistent. We have seen Son in the last couple of years, he has been tremendous – scoring goals, assisting goals.'

Alli could tread a path that few English players have taken before him. United legend David Beckham had a brief spell with the French champions towards the end of his career, while the late Ray Wilkins played for them in 1987. Jantzen Derrick became the first Englishman to head for the French capital in 1971.
