The former Italy and Southampton striker, Dani Osvaldo, has claimed he wouldn't want to be like Lionel Messi as he explains the reasons behind his retirement.

Osvaldo announced his retirement in 2016 and had stints with Juventus, Roma and Boca Juniors, but is now pursuing a career in rock music.

The 32-year-old left football behind him, retiring at a particularly young age, claiming 'the world of football was no longer for me'

'Would I like to be like Messi? No. I'd like to play like him, but he has no life. It's as if he lives in a golden prison,' he told Marca.

'He couldn't go somewhere and quietly drink something. Maybe he doesn't care about it, but I do.

'I imagine him buying the biggest TV in the world, but then he's never in his living room to use it.

'Failing that, he probably drives a Ferrari, knowing he lives 15 minutes away from the Barcelona's training ground…'

A lot of Osvaldo's footballing career will be remembered for controversial incidents on and off the pitch.

During his spell at Southampton in 2014, Osvaldo was given a three-match ban and hefty fine following a touchline bust up in a game with Newcastle.

Just weeks later the forward was given a two-week suspension for headbutting Portuguese defender Jose Fonte at the club’s training ground.

After retiring, the Argentinian formed a band called Barrio Viejo in Barcelona, along with some musicians he met during his time playing for Espanyol.

Osvaldo's biggest achievement in football was winning the Serie A title with Juventus in 2014 whilst on loan from Southampton.
