Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler has slammed Gary Neville for making a controversial claim about his Anfield career.
Neville had said the fact Fowler remained at Liverpool stopped him becoming England's greatest-ever goalscorer, and that he would have achieved the status had he joined him at Manchester United.
Speaking on Sky Sports show The Overlap on Tour last year, Neville said: 'Can I make a controversial statement?
'It might not even be controversial. Robbie Fowler could have been England's greatest-ever goalscorer if he hadn't grown up in that Liverpool team. So if he'd have been part of the Class of '92, at United.'
However, on Thursday's The LineUp show, Fowler finally responded to Neville's claim.
'I mean, that's disrespectful,' said the Liverpool icon after Jim White read aloud the quotes.
'In fact, we were probably close to matching Manchester United. Certainly when I think of maybe '96, that year we were brilliant, and possibly were better than Man United.
'We were probably inconsistent against the so-called weaker teams, Manchester United used to beat them whereas we maybe struggled to win those games.'
Fowler enjoyed a superb career at Liverpool as he won five trophies, including the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
The former striker scored 183 goals and delivered 50 assists in 369 games in the Reds' shirt, yet never lifted the Premier League or Champions League.
He did not match the heights of his club career with England as he scored only seven goals in 26 games.
Jamie Carragher also hit back at Neville's controversial statement last year: 'The Class of '92 never went for a drink. Oh my God! We went to Italy and prayed,' he joked.
'We went on walks. The Class of '92 won because you had Peter Schmeichel, Cantona and Roy Keane. It was nothing to do with you. Honest to God!'

Fowler might not win trophies but he always won our heart. And the funny thing is better United players don’t talk like this clone. Anyways we are winning trophies this season for our legends who could not.

Neville classic right place at right time. He was an above average at best but he was 1000% committed to the shirt and that kept him there. Countless brilliant players that were just in the wrong team. I also think he was coming from a good place in saying he could have been even better which I also think touches on his off field issues. Man U were more dedicated to winning and professional and with Fowler’s talent it could have helped on and off the pitch I think was his point…without saying it out loud.
You don’t know the meaning of above average do you ?? When you say someone is above average it means the person is more than average lol 😂

But actually, Hamie Carragher was very correct with that last paragraph, the class of 92 won with all others except Gary Neville
