Fraser Forster has insisted that he would be ready to assume responsibilities as the No 1 goalkeeper at Tottenham if he is given the opportunity.
The 6ft 7in stopper joined Spurs on a free transfer this summer after an eight-year spell at St Mary's with Southampton, becoming a understudy for the first time in his career since establishing himself at Celtic.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, the former England international revealed he decided to make the move to north London because the opportunity was 'good to turn down.'
'This has been the first time in my career where I've been a real No 2. I was obviously aware of what the situation would be when I came to the club but when a club of this stature comes along, and the opportunity is there, I felt it was too good to turn down.'
The 34-year-old added that training without knowing when the opportunity to represent the club is difficult but that he has continued to work hard for if and when the opportunity arises.
'It's hard, but I'm always of the view you just have to train as well as you can because I always think if you don't, that's when your chance will come.
'When your chance comes you want to be in the best shape and to know you've trained as well as you can to take that opportunity.'
After initially being confined to domestic cup competitions, with Hugo Lloris still returning from the World Cup Forster made his first Premier League appearance for Antonio Conte's side as they drew 2-2 with Brentford on Boxing Day.
The club captain then retook his place in the side's starting XI, but a number of high-profile errors most notably as the club sank to a dismal north London derby defeat last month led to calls for the 36-year-old to be dropped.
While Conte would show faith in his No 1, Forster would ultimately get his opportunity to assert his place in the starting lineup after Lloris suffered a knee injury in the win over Manchester City.
Forster explained that while does hope to prove himself as the club's first-choice, that his French counterpart is 'fantastic'.
'Obviously everyone in football dreams of being the number one at a club of this stature and I would like to do that if I ever got the opportunity.
'But equally, I’m fully aware Hugo is here and what he’s done in the game and he’s a fantastic person as well.'
