Frenkie de Jong has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, with Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag hopeful of once again working with the talent.
However, based on previous experiences, it could be difficult to get the deal done ahead of the 2024/25 campaign - with Ten Hag trying and failing to snatch the midfield maestro from Catalonia two years ago. With two more years left on his contract, it could be tricky again to tempt the 27-year-old to part ways with sunny Spain for the far-colder north west of England.
Already spending big this summer under the fresh start fever of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United aren't shy of options to bolster their squad should a deal for De Jong fail to materialise - especially considering sentinel Casemiro is expected to stay at Old Trafford for another season.
But what do we know about De Jong, and what is his relationship currently like with current side Barcelona? Here, Mirror Sport breaks down everything of interest - from his monumental net worth and his influencer girlfriend, to his long-standing United transfer links...
De Jong's impressive career
Born in Gorinchem, De Jong emerged through the Willem II youth set-up before signing his first professional contract for the side in 2015. However, he only made on appearance for the club before being swept away by Dutch giants Ajax the very same year he turned pro.
De Jong spent just one year in the Jong Ajax side before breaking through into the first team in 2016, making 89 appearances in the heart of midfield before Barcelona acquired him for €85million (£72.5m) in 2019. Over the past five years at Camp Nou, De Jong has appeared on 213 occasions, scoring an impressive 17 goals and setting a further 21 up despite predominantly being a defensive midfielder.
At international level, De Jong has achieved 54 caps for the Netherlands in all competitions, and was a part of the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League runner-up squad - narrowly missing out to Portugal by a single point.
De Jong's whopping net worth
At Barcelona, it is reported that De Jong earns a lucrative salary of €721,154-per-week (£615,411) - which equates to £2.4million a month or £32million per year. And while he can reportedly earn an extra €388,654 (£331,622) in add-ons, the midfield maestro has previously spoke of how he cut his salary for the first three years at Barca.
He said in 2022: "There have been many lies and falsehoods spread about my salary. In each of the first three years I played here, I cut my salary. Eventually, the money comes back, and it comes on top of my normal salary, so it looks bigger. I think a lot of people don’t understand this."
Through accumulative career earnings, SalarySport say that de Jong has a net worth of just over £52million. However, this could be higher through endorsement deals, sponsorships and appearance fees over the years.
De Jong's girlfriend
De Jong has been in a relationship with Mikky Kiemeney – a Dutch former hockey player turned model – since 2014. The 26-year-old made a name for herself at HC Den Bosch, but she ultimately decided to ditch the world of sport to concentrate on a social media career.
Fast forward to 2024, and the youngster has amassed a sensational Instagram following of 1.7million, frequently sharing snaps of her luxurious lifestyle with Frenkie. The two got engaged in the summer of 2022, each sharing the same two snaps of the moment that De Jong dropped the question in front of panoramic canyons. Mikky wrote: "I SAID YES," while Frenkie penned: "I can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together. She Said Yes."
Almost a year to the day later, the happy couple took to Instagram in a joint post to announce that they were expecting a baby together. Video footage of the two kissing and embracing at the beach played out as Ed Sheeran's Small Bump rang out, before de Jong embraced Mikky's visible bump. The pair then welcomed son Miles de Jong on November 21, 2023.
A possible United transfer
De Jong has been on United's radar for a long time now, with his former boss Ten Hag famously making a move for him in 2022 for a whopping £56million. While Barcelona reportedly agreed to the deal, it ultimately fell through due to personal terms, with De Jong upset over the La Liga side's willingness to sell him.
And while the transfer rumour mill has once again been churning this summer, De Jong seems content to stay in the Spanish capital. Speaking to media, he said: "Staying at Barca? Yes, I'm very happy in Barcelona with my family, for sure. Hansi Flick wants me to be key? I talked to him. It was good."
De Jong's contract with Barca runs until the summer of 2026, and while there are no talks of a renewal at present, things could become tense should the club accept a bid for him ahead of the new season judging by past experiences. A crowded midfield could turn De Jong's head, however, with the likes of Pedri, Gavi, Ilkay Gundogan and Fermin Lopez all battling for places in Flick's starting XI.
United have splashed the cash in the current transfer window, acquiring Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for £36.5m and Leny Yoro from Lille for £58m – and they are currently closing in on Bayern Munich stars Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui for a combined £60m.
If United can somehow turn De Jong's head, he'll reconnect with an abundance of former Ajax players at Old Trafford, including Antony, Andre Onana and Lisandro Martinez. It is also worth noting that Barca are reportedly open to offers for the 27-year-old Netherlands international amid their own ongoing financial issues.

He's signing players who are loyal to him, so they actually play for him unlike many signings in the past which pushed managers under the bus simply cause they didn't play for the manager instead money.
meaning he don't trust himself

It doesn’t matter whether Ajax United or Man Utd. All that matters is that United will be great again. Who cares about your opinion. ?🥱
