Gary Neville has recently compared Liverpool midfielder Thiago to Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick after a dominant display from the Spaniard vs Leeds.
Liverpool dominate Leeds
Sunday’s only Premier League clash played out at Elland Road, as Leeds United went in search of their first league win of the season.
Standing in their way this time was a Liverpool side who had enjoyed an impressive, unbeaten start to the campaign.
And, unfortunately for Leeds, that unbeaten start continued on Sunday as Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and Sadio Mane strikes eventually saw the Reds run out as 3-0 winners.
Liverpool are now joint-top of the Premier League whilst Leeds are down in 17th.
Neville compares Thiago to Paul Scholes
Following the clash, Gary Neville would speak about the game on his podcast.
When doing so, the former Manchester United defender would single Thiago out for praise.
The Spaniard was making his first start of the season and was somewhat surprisingly chosen ahead of skipper, Jordan Henderson.
However, Thiago’s selection was definitely justified, with the midfielder controlling the tempo of the clash throughout.
This would lead to Neville comparing Thiago to Man United legends Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick:
“Before the game you sometimes think do you need to fight fire with fire against Leeds and match their energy.
“So, when you see Elliott Thiago and Fabinho in midfield, who maybe aren’t the most athletic and mobile even though they can run, but they’re not the most athletic and mobile, you could have played Keita, Milner and Henderson who would probably run more.
“You think well maybe Leeds have got a chance to run off them, it was said in the studio as well I think.
“But it was the composure, he reminded me of sometimes [Paul] Scholes at Anfield, the game was so frantic and all of a sudden there was a small guy in the middle of the pitch, who just put his foot on it and you think oh there’s calm, there’s peace.
“[Michael] Carrick would do the same for us at Manchester United. And I think what Thiago did for Liverpool today was what he was brought in to do. And when it’s frantic around, everyone sprinting around and everyone’s desperate and it’s 100 miles an hour, put your foot on the ball and play the pass that just opens the game up and he did that.”
