Gareth Bale has announced his retirement from football at the age of 33.

On Monday, the former Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy player wrote: “After careful thought and consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The highest of highs over 17 seasons, that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me.”

Bale was Wales’ most-capped men’s player with 111 appearances and had a glittering career in the game, playing for 17 seasons with four different clubs.

He helped him country reach the 2016 and 2020 Euros before ending his international career by captaining Wales in their first World Cup since 1958 at Qatar 2022.

In 2008, in his first spell at Tottenham, he won the League Cup with the North London club.

Bale’s career took off when he went to Spain and won the Champions League five times with Spanish giants Real Madrid in his eight-year spell at the Santiago Bernabéu. With Los Blancos, the Welshman also won three LaLiga titles, three Spanish Super Cups, one Copa del Rey, three UEFA Super Cups and four FIFA Club World Cups.

He struggled for fitness in his final seasons at Madrid and returned to his former club Spurs on loan before eventually signing for MLS side LAFC. Bale made a memorable impact at the American club by scoring a 128th-minute equaliser in the MLS Cup final before lifting the trophy after winning the match of penalties.

Bale made his final competitive appearance when Wales faced England in the 2022 World Cup group stage match on November 29.
