Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister was attacked on Saturday night in Leeds city centre just hours after watching a legends match at Anfield.

The 54-year-old was in the crowd as a star-studded Liverpool team won 3-2 against a crop of AC Milan greats in a charity match.

Afterwards the Scot, who now works as assistant manager to Saturday's match-winner Steven Gerrard at Rangers, returned to Leeds with his wife Hayley, 40.

McAllister and his partner were waiting for a taxi in Leeds when he was assaulted, according to The Sun.

It is claimed that McAllister fell to the floor after being punched in the face and that his wife fought to pull the attacker off him, suffering a wrist injury in the process.

The Sun report that local police took McAllister to Leeds General Infirmary — where he needed at least 10 stitches in his top lip — after the attacker fled the scene.

McAllister and his wife are both said to have given a statement to police.

He is quoted by The Sun as saying: 'It's in the hands of the police.'
