Gary Neville gives his verdict on Solskjaer's potential Man United return

Gary Neville admitted he is not against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's potential return as interim Man United boss, even though it feels like 'Groundhog Day'.

Solskjaer is being considered as one of the options to replace Ruben Amorim, who was sacked this week, despite the fact that the Norwegian was dismissed from the post himself in 2021.

As Daily Mail Sport reported, it is Solskjaer and Michael Carrick locked in a two-way fight for the role on an interim basis.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of United's game against Burnley, Neville was asked if he'd support his old team-mate getting the job again on an interim basis.

He said: 'I wouldn't not. I think there is an element of... we saw this at Liverpool for 25-30 years when they were going through that period where they weren't winning, and you go through cycles... and United have done this for 12 years now.

'They put Ryan in charge, then Ole, then you go back to the old boys, then you go for a new one... it's almost like a cycle, like a movie that we've all seen before and Groundhog Day.

'What I do think is that Ole is someone that absolutely loves the club, he knows the job, he's been in the job. Other names that have been mentioned - Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy - these are really fantastic people, I've played with those guys for a lot of years. They love the club intensely, they get the club.

Neville went on to warn that even though the job would be on an interim basis, whoever is appointed will still be under huge scrutiny.

He said: 'But still they're going to come under a lot of pressure over the next four or five months if results don't go their way.

'They have to be ready for that, whoever's going to get it out of those three being mentioned, I wish them all the best because it's a tough role.'

Jamie Redknapp, also on punditry duty along with Tim Sherwood, named the manager he believes United should be chasing hard to succeed Amorim.

He said: 'Andoni Iraola, I'm such a big fan of his. I've got no doubt he's one of the most elite managers in world football. Man United are talking about getting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back as an interim. I don't understand why they wouldn't get him, it absolutely baffles me.

'Why not now? I don't want to see him leave Bournemouth. But he was second in the league earlier this season, lost three out of the back four, they've had a really difficult run with injuries - but he is an elite manager that I just cannot understand why Manchester United wouldn't go for him.

'Because he's had this run it's probably cost him the big opportunity at Man United, but they should look beyond that.'

Sherwood then asked whether Bournemouth would consider Solskjaer, to which Redknapp replied: 'Absolutely no chance. No one else in the Premier League would. Why's he not got a job back in the Premier League since he's left Besiktas?'

United begin life after Amorim on Wednesday night under Fletcher, who is only considered as having an outside chance of landing the role.

But for Neville, regardless of who is given the temporary role, the club need to appoint a world class manager at the end of the season.

He went on: 'They've got to bring in someone who's done it before, what they can't do is imagine this will go well. Manchester United have had a very challenging experience with Ralf Rangnick. It went well last time they put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in.

'All I would say is, as long as someone has done it before, got a bit of experience, can handle the media, can handle if results don't go their way, they need to get to the end of the season because I think the next appointment is obviously crucial. There's still a lot to play for this season. They've still got a chance of achieving Champions League football this season.

'One thing I would say is, even if someone comes in right now and has the most brilliant four months, Manchester United still need to make that decision at the end of the season to appoint an experience manager who's world class.'
