Gary Neville has claimed two problems are hindering Manchester United's progress under Erik ten Hag

United's loss to Aston Villa on Sunday ended an encouraging nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions. Some have suggested the fixture schedule has caught up with the Reds, and former defender Neville believes that it is true to some extent but also says a lack of continuity at centre-back cost his old club at Villa Park.

Lisandro Martinez has been a constant presence at the back, starting in all but one game this term. However, he has had three different partners in defence: Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, with all three coming in and out of the side.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Super Sunday programme, Neville said: "They keep getting injuries to the pairing. They can’t keep a steady pair.

“Varane gets injured and Maguire came in last week and Lindelof is in midweek and today, so that’s a real problem.”

Neville also believes United possess the weakest forward options out of the so-called 'big six' despite the huge investment that's been made in United's frontline in recent years.

He added: "Manchester United’s front three - they are the weakest out of the top six.

“The front players aren’t as good as they should be. Ten Hag is getting the maximum out of them, I don’t know where the money’s gone again.”

United will be hoping to gain revenge over Villa when the two teams meet yet again on Thursday in the Carabao Cup. After that it's a trip to Fulham before Ten Hag's men take a break from domestic action as the World Cup kicks off.
