Gary Neville lashes out at Man United's tactics against Wolves

Gary Neville hit out at Manchester United's tactics against Wolves during a passionate Monday Night Football analysis.

The Red Devils legend was frustrated by the team's set-up in the first 45 minutes, with Luke Shaw dropping into the centre of the park in an inverted full-back role, imitative of what Pep Guardiola has introduced with Manchester City.

United were often second-best as they scraped past Wolves 1-0, who had 23 shots to their 15 and the match was marred by a late controversy involving Andre Onana.

The debutant clattered into Wolves substitute Sasa Kalajdzic, sending him to the floor, and referees' boss John Moss later apologised to Wolves manager Gary O'Neil after no penalty was awarded, saying it was a 'blatant penalty' according to the visiting manager.

'It’s driven me crazy a little bit in the first half. I think they’re over-complicating it a little bit,' he said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

'In pre-season we saw Dalot go into that inverted full-back/midfield position against Lens. Tonight, because Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not as comfortable on the ball, we find Luke Shaw in there.

'The majority of Shaw’s touches have been in a left midfield position. He’s released himself in the last 10 minutes or so and he’s found himself getting a few touches in here (in the opposition penalty area).

'I think Luke Shaw was one of United’s best attacking players last season when he combined with Garnacho and Rashford. It’s simple at Old Trafford, the pitch is wide, you stretch teams. If you're a full-back that isn’t comfortable in that position, don’t put him as an inverted full-back.

'Shaw is one of the best attackers for United combining with that left-winger. They’ve got to release him in the second half and get him forward.'
