Gary Neville has hit out at Martin Zubimendi's recent form and said he's been left underwhelmed by the Spanish midfielder this season.
The Gunners returned to winning ways on Saturday night as they beat Newcastle 1-0 through Eberechi Eze's early strike to return to the top of the table.
However, it was a nervy display, with David Raya making several important saves after Eddie Howe's side caused plenty of problems for their opponents.
One Arsenal player to struggle on Saturday evening was Zubimendi, a £60million arrival from Real Sociedad last summer.
The Spanish midfielder started the season superbly, but in recent months his performances have dipped and Neville singled him out for criticism.
'I thought at the start of the season that Zubimendi was a great signing,' Neville told The Gary Neville Podcast after the game. 'He's been a good player for Arsenal, but right now I was expecting that this would be where Zubimendi would be the player.
'Who's going to be the difference player? I thought (Viktor) Gyokeres would get the goals for them in these big moments and get to 2-0. His lack of quality at the end was poor on that counter attack. He's got to do better than that.
'But you think of what (Andrea) Pirlo is, or (Paul) Scholes or Rodri, Bernardo Silva - the player who can dictate play in a game like this, get Arsenal on the ball, organise and get them with authority and he's not demonstrating that. He's struggling in the games and he has done for a few weeks now.'
Neville also hinted at a tactical problem within Arsenal's midfield, which saw them only have 45 per cent of possession and struggle against Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock.
'(Martin) Odegaard does it better,' Neville added. 'Odegaard went deeper (today), but the problem is when Odegaard goes deeper, (Declan) Rice then goes deeper and Zubimendi is already deep.
'Then you've got three players, or certainly two in deep areas. You can't have that. You want them to be rotating with each other, and you want one back there to link play with the defence and the full-backs.
'It felt to me today that Zubimendi, Rice and Odegaard got outplayed by that Newcastle midfield. It was 55 per cent possession to Newcastle, 45 per cent to Arsenal... surprising, very surprising.'
Neville continued: 'But not surprising in the sense in how I saw that Newcastle midfield play. They were far better than the Arsenal midfield.
'So a bit of thinking for Mikel Arteta to do in terms of his midfield, how they can control games, show authority, keep the rhythm of the passing.'
Neville's criticism of the Spaniard, who was close to joining Liverpool in 2024, comes after his fellow pundit Jamie Carragher recently shared similar thoughts.
Speaking after Arsenal's 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth earlier this month, Carragher claimed Zubimendi was 'really struggling right now' and 'having a tough time in midfield'.
Zubimendi has made 50 appearances across all competitions this season and started 33 of the Gunners' 34 Premier League games.
Arteta's side are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie, before they host Fulham next Saturday.

Smile, well it clocked to me you're a Man utd fan, sorry about that tho, i just don't like when he talks stupidly (about my players), Did zubi started the season this way?? Hell No!, form fluctuates, Haaland once went 13games without scoring. Salah has been shit this season, palmer isn't as cold as he used to be, but they're all world class and sti ability to change games,. Zubi is lacking momentum for now ,That's my points here.
All the best😂

Neville is special our captain,he won the league the champions league for us,I don’t like his mouth though at times, but look at zubimendi for a while he needs to be better than his doing, the good part is you playing your games ahead of Manchester City, that makes you clear favorite to win it,just win your next game, don’t call our captain a failure 😞

'Failure' isn't affiliated to his playing career but his coaching career, just ask a Valancia fan who neville is.

Well, me insisting on not listening to those doesn't means zubi is flawless, doesn't mean i don't notice all you've analyzed, but with the critics coming a failure like neville whose club isn't even stable is what i won't buy in. Zubi is still new and he himself came out to admit he's bee below per too, he sighted minor injury and illness, he's played a lot than he should considering the fact we also have a good deputy in Norgaard. Talking about partey, i did better go for an-always-available player than one week on 3-months off, partey was great but how much did he helped the team during crucial moments?? He was just injury-prone, clubs don't revolve around those. Zubi is magnificent, the next after Rodri, a target for both RM and Liverpool. We can only support him as opposed to pile on silly takes that vanished his morales. He'll be back soon!

When pressed really hard he makes terrible decisions, his been the easiest target 🎯,his new to the league,he must learn, have you seen how teams running him down,United did so terrible 😢,I think if you hadn’t let Partey go,he would have won arsenal the league long before

Partey would have won the league already for them, zubimendi is new to the league that makes him an easy target, united pressed him until he did a terrible back pass 🥹
Partey would never had played the amount of games that Zubimendi has played. Plus he gave away so many balls unnecessarily.

Lol, i don't listen to opinions of those whose clubs are not in same level as we are this season, form deepens but class is still there. At the start of the season everyone praised him, and now opinion changes, I don't listen to shit talks, Zubi is still our Zubi and this pundits don't know more than the Manager. Neville himself was a failure at Valencia. He should out himself first!

liability cos he just has just one injury ridden season???
before injury he has been just the same...Haverts also had injury but he's performing and contributing alot after he got out...you're just blindfolded by Odegaard who's too central and lacking flexibility towards the goal and that's what arsenal is lacking in order to achieve something...Arteta's favouratism of Odegaard make him bench Eze over Odegaard, and now that he gem Eze can't be ignored, then still he moved him to the left just to fit Odegaard in...with him prioritized forget the hope of winning a trophy...What's really good is that you won't go anywhere when he'll continue to expose himself in all the games this season, maybe that's when you'll understand

when will these guys ever talk about Odegaard who's a complete liability? before you talk about anybody, start with Odegaard...
