Gary Neville singled out Joe Gomez for praise after the centre back put in an imperious display against Manchester City at Anfield.

Gomez, next to Virgil van Dijk, kept out City's array of attacking talent - most notably Erling Haaland - as Liverpool ended Pep Guardiola's side's unbeaten start to the league season.

Awarding the defender the man of the match award over James Milner, Neville labelled Gomez 'outstanding'.

'That’s my man of the match, Joe Gomez,' Neville said on commentary on Sky Sports.

'It could’ve went to James Milner but it’s going to him. He’s been outstanding at right centre-back.

'I’m sure City were looking to target before the game but he’s covered behind Milner, he’s made some brilliant interceptions himself.'

The one-time England international came into the game in confident form after deputising in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Ibrox in the week.

Gomez's cross from the right-back position gave Roberto Firmino a tap in to put Liverpool 2-1 ahead on Wednesday evening and on the path to their resounding 7-1 victory.

Sunday's job required him to defend much deeper and up against Haaland Gomez was always likely to be given a tough game with the Norwegian having netted 20 times in all competitions already this season.

Barring a few hairy moments, notably in the second half when City had a goal chalked off that had been initiated down the right inside channel of Liverpool's defensive third, Gomez emerged from the game relatively unscathed.

Klopp, speaking to BBC Sport after the game, echoed Neville's sentiments and singled his defender out for praise.

'Joe Gomez was outstanding, he is outstanding no doubt about it. James Milner - come on, how many people thought "oh no Milner v Foden"?

'But he did outstandingly well, we had to find a few solutions but they all did incredibly well.'
