Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says Virgil van Dijk "100 per cent" deserves to claim the Ballon d'Or for his "faultless" performances en route to winning the Champions League.
Van Dijk is in the running for football's top individual prize this year, going up against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.
Gerrard, who is now in charge of Scottish giants Rangers, has admitted to being "Messi's number one fan", but is in no doubt that Van Dijk should pick up the Ballon d'Or next month.
Speaking after Rangers' Europa League draw with Feyenoord, Gerrard responded when asked by a Dutch reporter if the Liverpool defender should win: "Yes, 100 per cent.
"I'm Messi's number one fan, for sure. I love the player. Obscene numbers in his game in terms of assists and goals. I'm definitely a Messi fan, in the gang.
"But if you talk about consistency from one player over a year, who wins the European Cup and is absolutely faultless in every performance, that means you deserve to win the Ballon d'Or."

if VVD wins a ballon dor' and lahm and neier never did it's a disgrace! way more dominating and consistant players for both club and country and never had a chance with messi and Ronaldo's performances and it should be the same again messi was clearly the best player and should win it! sick of hearing about VVD the most overrated defender and just player in general in years I know liverpool finally won something after 20 years but they also lost as many games as they won to do it! lol so why should a defender be rewarded for that!! far more more dominant defenders statistically both individual and collective as a defending unit have been better than vvd and liverpool and couldnt beat ronaldo or messi! biggest media train for a player ever seen!!

Deserve is the iconic word for all Liverpool players.. They are shouting for last 10 years that we deserve to win league.. and now another guy is telling what a Liverpool player deserve... Well if you deserve it then earn it.. Why to ask for that...
