Bruno Fernandes does not get the credit he deserves in this country, according to new Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo.
Forest host United on Saturday evening with the aim of building on their 3-1 Boxing Day win at Newcastle and Nuno says he is puzzled by the criticism his fellow countryman receives.
'Bruno Fernandes, I have a big admiration for him, as a player and as an individual,' he said.
'He's so competitive. Maybe some criticise him, but being competitive within the game is something I think all professionals should have.
'To be able to have this desire of always wanting to win and always wanting to do it makes you grow and makes you better. He's a big player, a special player, one of the best in the Premier League definitely.'
Nuno says the perception of Fernandes back in Portugal matches his own.
'There's a lot of respect for him,' he said. 'He plays for the national team and is captain of United.
'As Portuguese people we are proud of him, especially among the young generation. He represents a lot.
'Not only him but Cristiano Ronaldo, all of these players for us - we are very proud they are doing so well around the world.'
