Gordon: I don't think there's a gap between us and Spain; We could have easily won

In the UEFA Nations League A, England lost 2-3 at home to Spain. England forward Anthony Gordon, who scored a goal in the match, was interviewed afterward.

Reporter: Antony, sorry about the loss. Did Spain deserve to win tonight, or did you miss your chances?

Gordon: I think it came down to us missing chances. I thought it was an extremely exciting game for both the spectators and players on the pitch, with some of the attacking football on display reaching the highest level. But in a match decided by individual errors like this, you always feel like you gave the game away rather than the opposition truly earning the win. That said, you could argue both teams deserved a point—they were good, and we matched them; ultimately, it came down to mistakes on both sides.

Reporter: If Kane had scored that penalty, would that have changed the match?

Gordon: I think so. It would have put us in a very strong position to push for more goals. We were hungry for victory at that point and wanted to press home our advantage from the start of the second half. We built that momentum, but you know, penalties are unpredictable. Kane rarely misses, so we would never blame him for this one.

Reporter: Could this become a blueprint for the team? We've discussed the future style and direction of this team many times; could your goal be seen as an example of that style?

Gordon: To some extent, yes. As I've said over the past week, playing more directly in an English style, with a faster tempo, truly pressuring opponents into a passive defensive shape—that's what we want to do. So in some ways, tonight confirms what I said before, which is encouraging, but ultimately, it didn't bring us a win.

Reporter: Looking back now, how would you assess the gap with the top level? Spain are currently the best team in the world; what do you think about the difference between us tonight?

Gordon: As I said at the press conference a few days ago, I don't think there's any gap between us at all. I feel we're already on the same level as them. We could have easily won this game. If the penalty had gone in, I think we would have built on that momentum and won. It's easy to say in hindsight, but I felt really good during the match, and I'm convinced that if the penalty had gone in, we would have won. So I don't think there's a gap. I said at the press conference this week that if we play them in a final, I'm full of confidence. Although confidence doesn't always translate to victory, I think everyone saw tonight that we are a top team in the world.
