Guardiola admits Man City did 'everything but score' as Messi sunk his old boss

Pep Guardiola could only find one fault in Manchester City's performance against Lionel Messi and Co on Tuesday – they couldn't find the net.

PSG's new all-star attacking trident of Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar proved too strong for City, despite dangerous spells from the Premier League champions.

Bernardo Silva missed an unthinkable open goal moments after Raheem Sterling hit the bar with a six-yard header he also should have scored in the first-half.

After beating Chelsea at the weekend City round-out a trio of critical away fixtures at Anfield on Sunday, and Guardiola's confidence wasn't rocked by what he saw at the Parc des Prances.

'Good performance. We did everything except score. They defended deep and were dangerous with counter-attack,' Guardiola told BT Sport.

'The team was there - the same as Stamford Bridge. It's a pity. We played to win. Unfortunately they didn't need much to score their goals.

'The [Messi] goal was fantastic.

'We're going to eat good tonight, drink a glass of wine, recover and prepare for the Liverpool game.'

City won a nine-goal thriller against RB Leipzig in their first Group A clash and should have no problems qualifying with PSG. They face Club Brugge next in Europe.

The Sky Blues reached the final last season but were defeated by a dominant Chelsea.

PSG will likely be among their biggest challengers to that elusive maiden European crown this season, and the return fixture at the Etihad in November will make for fascinating viewing.
