Guardiola's Spanish curse in the Champions League

Since Pep Guardiola left Barcelona in 2012, he's failed to get hold of the Champions League trophy at either Bayern Munich or Manchester City and it's been Spanish opposition who've denied him more often than not.

Guardiola's City side were dumped out of the competition at the quarter-final stage for the second year in a row, this time by Tottenham on Wednesday night.

During his time at the Camp Nou, the Catalan coach won the European crown twice in finals against Manchester United in Rome and London.

However, his tenure at Bayern Munich was overshadowed by the failure to succeed in Europe given that he inherited a Champions League winning squad in 2013.

Guardiola guided the Bundesliga club to the semi-finals in his first season in charge, eventually losing out to Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid as Los Blancos ran out 4-0 winners on the night at the Allianz Arena in the second leg.

It was a similar story 12 months later as a Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona dumped Bayern out at the last four in a tie that included Messi's humiliation of Jerome Boateng at the Camp Nou.

Spanish opposition would be Guardiola's downfall again during his last season in Germany as Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid edged a bad-tempered semi-final.

A move to Manchester City promised much but delivered very little in a difficult first year in England that included a surprising defeat to Kylian Mbappe's Monaco in the last 16.

Despite walking to the Premier League title the following campaign, City were knocked out by English opposition in the form of a resurgent Liverpool at the quarter-final stage.

First-half goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane gave Jurgen Klopp's side a 3-0 lead from the first leg before the Egyptian and Roberto Firmino ensured City's exit at the Etihad Stadium a week later.

Now, Spaniard Fernando Llorente's controversial second half strike settled City's quarter-final tie with Tottenham as Guardiola's search for a third Champions League medal remains unsuccessful.
