Guardiola's UCL curse at Man City: Almost 800m euros spent and no semi final

Pep Guardiola has suffered disappointment after disappointment in the Champions League as Manchester City boss.

This season, that disappointment that came at hands of Lyon, who dumped City out at the quarter-final stage in Lisbon.

In his four years at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola hasn't been able to guide City past the last eight of the competition, despite spending 778 million euros on signings.

Before he arrived in England, the Catalan coach had reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in each of his four seasons as Barcelona boss and each of his three years at Bayern Munich.

In his first season at City, Guardiola saw his side eliminated by Monaco at the last 16 stage.

In each of the two years after that, City were knocked out by English opposition - first Liverpool in 2018 and then Tottenham in 2019.

Now, once again, Guardiola's men have failed to reach the semi-finals - something they have only achieved once in their history.

Manuel Pellegrini was the last and only City boss to get to a Champions League semi-final, doing so in the 2015/16 season.
